Read this before acting on anything here that involves a live animal — particularly a sick one, a cub, or a den under your shed.

1. General information only

Our articles are researched, cited and revised, and each one carries the date it was last checked. Even so, we make no warranty that any article is complete, current or applicable to your particular situation, and any reliance you place on it is at your own risk. Wildlife is variable; so is the evidence about it.

2. Not veterinary advice

Fox Hut is written by a field naturalist, not a veterinary surgeon. Nothing here is a diagnosis or a treatment plan, for a wild animal or a pet.

  • Never medicate a wild animal on the strength of a web page. Dosing wildlife through bait is unreliable and can poison non-target animals, including dogs.
  • For a sick or injured fox, contact a local wildlife rescue or the RSPCA (or your national equivalent) and describe what you see.
  • For your own animals, speak to a vet. Advice written about wild foxes does not transfer to pets.

Wildlife law, animal welfare law, firearms law and pest control regulation differ enormously between countries, and often between states, provinces and counties. Articles here describe general practice and, where relevant, UK law. They are not legal advice and must not be treated as confirmation that any action is lawful where you live. Check your own local law — particularly before blocking a den, trapping, relocating or otherwise interfering with a wild animal, or before keeping any fox species.

4. Safety around wild animals

You are responsible for your own safety and for the welfare of the animals you encounter. We describe how to watch foxes without disturbing them, and that guidance assumes you keep your distance. Following any suggestion here is a decision you make yourself.

5. Species, regions and law differ

Most articles are written primarily about the red fox (Vulpes vulpes), with the other species covered where they are named. Behaviour, breeding timing, legal status and conservation status all vary by species and by region — an article that is accurate for a fox in Yorkshire may not describe one in Alberta, Sydney or Sicily. Where timing matters, we give the Northern Hemisphere temperate calendar unless stated otherwise.

6. Sources and evidence

We cite the research behind our claims and say plainly where the evidence is contested or thin. We are not responsible for the accuracy of third-party research, and scientific understanding changes — a paper that is current today may be revised or superseded. Where we describe a study, we link it so you can read it yourself and disagree with our reading.

The Site links to research papers, wildlife bodies and rescue organisations. We do not control those sites and are not responsible for their content, accuracy, availability or privacy practices, and a link is not an endorsement. Visiting them is at your own risk.

8. Advertising disclosure

The Site is funded by advertising, served by Google AdSense and other partners, which is what keeps it free and paywall-free. Ads are visually distinct from our writing. We do not control, endorse or take responsibility for advertised products or the claims made in them, and any dealings with an advertiser are between you and them.

We do not run sponsored articles, we take no payment for coverage, and we hold no commercial relationship with pest control, fur, hunting or wildlife-tourism interests. If that ever changes, it will be disclosed on the page in question.

9. Errors and corrections

Despite our checks, the Site may contain errors, outdated figures or broken links. We correct them in place and move the "last checked" date when the text changes. If you spot something wrong — especially if you can point to a source — please tell us at contact@foxhut.online. Corrections from readers have changed several of these articles.

10. Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, Fox Hut and the people who run it are not liable for any loss or damage arising from your use of, or reliance on, the Site or anything linked from it. The Site is provided "as is" and "as available". Nothing here limits liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, for fraud, or for anything else that cannot lawfully be excluded.
